Did you know Edit. User reviews 4 Review. Top review. A remarkable small film from Iran. A director holds a casting call for actors to appear in his next film.
The director calls in each person, sometimes in large groups, and asks them all why they came. He then requests that they act, some he even demands to laugh or cry within 10 seconds because that's what actors can do, indeed must do.
Alternately cruel and cajoling he is relentless in his pursuit of the truth of acting. Abbas Randjbar A. Green Film House Amoon. The cinema is for everyone. If the cinema reflects on life, then there's room for everyone. The director of Salaam Cinema , Makhmalbaf , is also the director…. Truly an impressive and all-encompassing investigation of artistic humanity and truthfulness, Salaam Cinema is yet another meta-Iranian film that expertly balances the line between reality and fiction.
Everyone is desperate for a role, hordes of people are pushing through a small opening, crushing others in the process. All this for the opportunity to audition for a part. People wait in a line outside, they straighten up when they see the camera, some run alongside the frame, desperately trying to garner more screen time. Within all of this lies the question, is it worth it? Makhmalbaf investigates this question by further expanding the question: Is art worth this lack of…. Review by V.
When watching Makhmalbaf's films, one always gets this fascinating unsure feeling. Is this real or fiction? The way of seeing things differs so radically from traditional western or even experimental cinema that it often confuses us. But the main points, the deepest ideas are never unclear even if we might have troubles putting them properly in to words.
In Salaam Cinema , the hierarchy of film making is revealed. It's at the same time beautiful love song to cinema but it also questions it by showing the stark reality behind something that makes us feel unlike anything else in the world.
Many are ready to die for it and sell their souls for it but it's not that simple. It's cruel…. Humanity happens, and so does art. And as they both go hand in hand and compliment each other on screen, we just know that we're witnessing something special.
So much so that we can even pinpoint the exact scenes, or moments, or motions that made us burst in emotions. Humanity in art, and art in humanity Humanity happens, art follows. They dance their way into our hearts like a perfect duo. Humanity serves as a universal language, familiar in textures and contexts which could break the cultural barriers so the intended art can be delivered at its easiest way. As easy and friendly as salaam —greetings. It's always nice to see some great director such as him made a reassuring statement that cinema is for everyone.
