Just kidding. Maybe there is something peculiar about bit Windows in the way well, you know we are talking about Microsoft. Come to think about it, even bit version of Photoshop CS5 can't do some of the stuff in bit Windows. You have to fire up bit version instead. Not very difficult really.
And for a company such as Canon it'd be a doddle. I honestly can't understand Canon's attitude sometimes. That's a much more complicated scenario - and it's not CS5 that wont work properly, it's plugins.
As we know bit systems don't allow us to install unsigned drivers unless we override that protection , getting Microsofts approval probably costs more than they figure it's worth especially as there's many free alternatives out there.
Yep - that's what I reckon too. Which personally I think is fairly ordinary behaviour on their part. And at some point they'll have to do it anyway - It wouldn't surprise me if windows 8 or 9 was 64bit only.
A RAW Codec stands out as being the exception, so if they can do it for some they ought to be able to do it for all. Thanks for the alternative suggestions, I'd just about accepted I was going to have to pay for something, but I'll certainly give FastPictureViewer a trial.
Photographers feel guilty that all they do for a living is press a button. Maybe that's the answer, why spend money on a CanonRAW codec when they already supplied viewing programs which work perfectly well. I agree with you though, how many actually install those programs. Yeah but the developer behind FastPictureViewer has managed it, with what looks like a readily available and cheap code signing certificate Comodo - just like the one I use.
I really doubt that's what's holding Canon back. As to what is holding them back, well who knows There is nothing Canon has to do there to make them run on the 64bit OS. For the RAW codec, this codec is like a plugin that is used in the 64bit OS: a plugin also has to be 64bit to be able to run in a 64bit process.
So basically it comes to: Canon hasn't done anything at all to make sure their programs run on 64bit. For most programs, porting them to a true 64bit version is pretty straight forward and doesn't require a lot of work.
But that's not always the case. Some code is harder to port. But I don't know if this is the case for the RAW codec. Maybe they do a lot of lowlevel stuff like shifting bytes, that can be a bit tricky, but shouldn't be so hard, either. I am flooded with CR2 files. Maybe if all Canon users petitioned them then they might realise it's something people want? Eventually the whole computing world will be 64 bit. For one, codecs are not so easy to write. Starting with Vista, imaging codecs gets loaded from many different contexts including system processes running at elevated privileges and a crashing codec can have serious consequences on overall system stability, while at the same time being very difficult to diagnose — let alone cure.
My guess is that the cost-benefit-risk analysis for creating such a codec is not favorable in the eyes of the big guys: virtually no effect on their bottom line while creating an oportunity for a PR disaster if things go wrong.
