Although Internet results won't be directly listed in Start searches, there will still be an option on the bottom to "see web results," which will open said results in a new pane alongside the Start menu. If you're on Home edition of Windows and don't have the Group Policy Editor, here's a guide on installing the utility along with a third-party software recommendation that brings group policy functionality to any version of Windows.
Search for gpedit. Then enable the following policies: double-click on them for the option. There's also a whole section of Group Policy settings for customizing the Start menu and Taskbar. Take note that by default Everything stays on all the time in the background. Overall, it is the combination of speed and accuracy that makes Everything the best free desktop search program.
I highly doubt you will find another program that provides speedy accuracy better than Everything. However, no program is perfect and Everything is no exception. The other major issue with Everything is that it is no longer being actively developer — the last update was on March 13, Program Name: Agent Ransack. While the interface can be improved upon, Agent Ransack is an excellent desktop search program that allows users to find files or folders by name, or search the contents of files.
For search queries, Agent Ransack allows users to run regular search queries, use Boolean expressions, or regex. Whereas Everything uses an index to find files and folders, Agent Ransack does not use an index. Also, even though Everything is faster, Agent Ransack is one of the quickest non-index desktop search programs out there. One really cool feature I like about Agent Ransack is when you search within file contents, Agent Ransack provides a preview of what it found for each file, allowing you to quickly see if that is what you are looking for or not without having to open the actual file.
Overall, Agent Ransack is not necessarily better or worse than Everything — it is just different and caters to different needs.
Note: Copernic Desktop Search Home is free for non-commercial use only. Copernic Desktop Search is a mix of the two — Copernic indexes and allows for searching within files, as well as searching for file names. For all intents and purposes, Copernic is an excellent desktop search program. To add a new location to the index, click on the Modify button. Any network drive or external hard drive will show up in the list of possible locations. You can check off any drive or folder that you would like to include in the index.
Depending on how many files and folders are in a location, it could take some time for search indexer to index everything. If you have noticed that certain files are not being indexed by search indexer even though they are included in the search locations, you may have to add the file type.
You can do this by clicking on the Advanced button on the main Indexing Options screen. Then click on the File Types tab. If the file extension is not in the list, go ahead and add it at the bottom. Then select it and choose whether you want to index just the properties or the properties and the file contents. If you know the file contains only text, make sure to select the second radio button. You can also click on Index Settings to modify some of the settings for the Search Indexer.
Here you can choose to index encrypted files and other options like treating similar words with diacritics as different words.
